Harold Wesley Anderson, the son of D.W. and Effie Requist Anderson was born March 22, 1919 in Montgomery county, Iowa near Wallin.
He passed away on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at Stanton Care Center, Stanton, Iowa at the age of 88 years, 6 months and 18 days.
Harold was raised on a farm in the Wallin area and graduated from Stanton High School in 1936. He soon started farming with his father. Harold began courting Norma E. Lindell in l937, and on March 22, 1941 they were married at Tabor Lutheran Church, Wallin, IA.
Harold entered the U.S. Army on April 2, 1942. On December 10, 1945, he was discharged as 1st Lt., having received a Bronze Star. After his military service, Harold returned to his career of farming near Wallin, where he actively farmed until 1997. Harold was a true farmer and problem solver; from experimenting with creative ways to fix machinery to practicing soil conservation. Harold served as a 4-H leader for many years and enjoyed assisting the boys with their projects. The Anderson's were honored as the Farm Family of the Week on WOW TV in the late 1950's.
Harold served on the County School Board for 12 years. He was a lifetime member of Tabor Lutheran Church where he had served as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, on Church Council, and Luther League counselor. He was one of several men who helped build the parsonage for Tabor Lutheran Church. Harold was a member of the Montgomery county Historical Society. He enjoyed camping, genealogy, woodworking and drinking coffee, as long as there was sugar.
Harold and Norma enjoyed their trip to Sweden, wallpapering together and being active in the Red Oak Lions Club. Harold was a 50 year member of the American Legion Ernie Johnson Post #406 of Stanton.
Harold was very proud of his all children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He felt honored and privileged to sail with his son, Wayne upon the Naval Carrier, USS Independence for a short cruise. His children said, "Dad took pride in his work as a farmer, and showed them how to love others."
Harold was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Norma on June 14, 2005; 3 brothers: Wayne, Chester and Robert; and sister, Phyllis. Harold is survived by 5 children: Eldon Anderson and wife Mary of Millis, MA; Wayne Anderson and wife Peggie of Lemoore, CA; Norman Anderson and wife Becky of Cedar Rapids, IA; Mary Jo Harderson and husband Chuck of Corning, IA; and Elaine Gregory and husband Patrick of Blair, NE; 15 grandchildren: Beth Anderson, Dave Yvonne Anderson, Ashley Anderson, Brian Jodi Anderson, Brent Christine Anderson, Sarah Matt Bidne, John Harderson, Joel Harderson, Ellyn Erik Hays, Andy Brooke Gregory, Mark Maureen Tompkins, Tad Michelle Tompkins, Gina Brian Tashima, Jared Benson and Lindsay Benson; 17 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Norma Eleanora Anderson, the daughter of Joel A. and Effie E. Hultine Lindell was born December 18, 1917 in Montgomery county, Iowa northeast of Stanton, Iowa. She died on Tuesday, June l4, 2005 at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 87 years, 6 months and 27 days.
Norma was raised in the Stanton and Wallin areas. She attended school in Montgomery county and later completed office management classes at Clarinda. Norma was united in marriage to Harold W. Anderson on March 22, 1941 at the Tabor Lutheran Church, Wallin, Iowa. They lived on a farm north of Stanton until moving to Red Oak in l987.
She had worked for many people in Red Oak and at Connor's. Norma then became the office manager for Farmers Mutual Telephone Company in Stanton for 23 years. The children said, we never needed a phone book with mom around.
Norma was a member of the Tabor Lutheran Church, serving in many offices and roles as, Junior Mission Band Leader, Luther League counselor, Sunday school teacher, chairman of the church council, women's groups, was the organist for 20 years and sang in a ladies chorus. Norma and Harold helped many intern pastors, serving as surrogate parents.
Norma had many hobbies; knitting, quilting many quilts for missions, cross stitch, playing cards and was an active member of the Red Oak Lions Club. Norma enjoyed genealogy, being involved with the Montgomery county Historical Center and Stanton Historical Center. Norma and Harold were active in 4-H with the children and was the Farm Family of the Week on WOW TV in the late l950's.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers, Einar, Delano and Milton and 2 sisters, Dora Ossian and Elvera Linn. Norma is survived by her husband of 64 years, Harold W. Anderson of Red Oak, IA, 5 children; Eldon Anderson and wife Mary of Millis, MA, Wayne Anderson and wife Peg of Lemoore, CA, Norman Anderson and wife Becky of Cedar Rapids, IA, Mary Jo Harderson and husband Chuck of Corning, IA and Elaine Gregory and husband Patrick of Blair, NE, 15 grandchildren; Beth, David, Ashley, Tad, Mark, Gina, Brian, Brent, Jared, Lindsey, Sarah, John, Joel, Ellyn and Andy, 13 great-grandchildren, a sister, Mae Isaacson of Omaha, NE, other relatives and a host of friends.
